WIGAN ATHLETIC (LATICS LITERACY)

At Wigan Athletic, the club have developed a project similar to Premier League Reading Stars which uses the club and its players to motivate children to pick up a book. Latics Literacy targets a number of primary schools in and around Wigan, using young coaches to encourage the Year Five pupils to develop their enjoyment of reading.

The project uses learning materials that use the players as role models, but it also incorporates elements of the Double Club by combining a programme of classroom lessons with football and other multi-sport activity sessions. A PL/PFA grant of £117,630 has helped extend the Latics Literacy project into even more schools across the area.
